Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois
I have just started a business in the city of CHicago approx 5 years ago. The city did a tax audit and concluded that I owe $20,000 with another $20,000 in penalties and fees. I offered to pay 26,000. My business cannot afford anything else or I will go out of business. Who can I talk to? I think its fair enough for the city to get what I owe. The other option is that the business fails because of penalties and fees. A hearing will be scheduled if I cannot pay the 46,000. What is your input or who can help me?

1. Hire an attorney to review the whole thing. It should be an attorney who handles municipal law and municipal taxes.
2. Take your chances and sit down with corporation counsel without an attorney. Anything you say could be an admission, but my experience is that unless you have been criminally complicit all they want is some money and don't want to see legitimate businesses shut down, but here again you may not know what a fair settlement is.
3. Wait til a court hears the case, take your chances and go out of business.
