Depends many factors. The cost can be anywhere from nothing to tens of thousands of dollars. Do you need a corporation or LLC? Are you going to have partners? Do you need to be licensed with the state, county, or municipality? Better have insurance and many contracts will require a bond. Are you going to do residential, commercial, government? You really need to sit down with an attorney and an accountant so you can get specific answers to specific questions.

As a Franchise Attorney I entirely agree with the other attorney answer. It's like saying "what's the approximate cost of a car?" There are numerous factors that need to be considered before a meaningful range can be developed. This is not a bulletin board-type question. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.

I agree with other counsel although unless you are purchasing a franchise there is no need to contact a "franchise attorney"- a good local attorney experienced in helping people form businesses is recomended.
