Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois

theft of sugar packets

I work for a large cellular company. 6-7 people out of 600 employees are being questioned about the ''theft'' of sugar, sweetner and creamer packets. When questioned all parties involved admitted to having a handful of sugar, etc in their desk for personal use. The items in question are provided free to the employees by the company in the break rooms. We are in our second week of the investigation and now one of the supervisors involved has told another employee they would be letting these people go. All of these people have been with the company 7-10 years, never had any type of discipline action taken against them. We are Union and do have the union involved who say they can't fire anyone but we are scared senseless. What are your thoughts?

Re: theft of sugar packets

Sugar receives a federal subsidy, so perhaps the FBI should get involved in this! Seriously though, if I was one of those employees, I would be in contact with an attorney immediately to sue for wrongful termination. As an employee in that situation I would be glad that occurred, because I knew I have a "sweet" settlement coming from the company who would prefer not to have such a stupid story told to a group of jurors.
