Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois
Treble Damages
We were recently awarded treble damages in our lawsuit. The judge's interpretation of the law states that treble is defined as the judgement multiplied by three (Judgement is
$300,000 x three = $900,000). Our interpretation of treble damages is the Judgement $300,000 + $900,000 (three times judgement) = $1,200,000.00. Is there any case law that would support our interpretation? Can we appeal this verdict?

Re: Treble Damages
NO. You cannot double(actually quadruple) dip
The statute that provides for treble damages is clear and case law supports the judge's interpretation. The statute says you take your actual damages x 3, not you actual damages plus three times as punitive damages
