Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Illinois

Racial Discrimination?

i am a filipino-american. recently, i went to an express store to ask them to remove the security tag on the dress i bought from another one of their retail stores. i showed the receipt as proof, however, the employee that i spoke with made me look like i stole the item with the tone of her voice saying that it was odd that they did not carrying the dress i bought. the employees are all white, but it's bad to assume their characters, so i brushed that off. i purchased more items and asked for a box. even before i could finish my sentence, the same woman said they didn't have any boxes, yet right behind her were dozens upon dozens of boxes. i froze, shock in disbelief and did not know what to say. a friend of mine called the store less than an hour later to complain about the incident. she asked for management and mentioned the word discrimination without specifiying what type, and the lady quickly said she was puerto rican. it's not about the boxes, it's the way she made me feel. i did not defend myself while she made me feel like a second class citizen. i want to do something, but the woman who did this is the manager and my complaints will just be thrown in the trash. is this racial discrimination or am i just overreacting?

Re: Racial Discrimination?

In my opinion, you could have a race discrimination case, if you can prove that you

were treated differently than say (white) customers because of your race/nationality. These cases can be difficult to prove, but if you feel strongly about how you were violated, you should pursue it.
