Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Illinois

rights of a patients family

in 2001, my mother passed away suddenly in the hospital. She had surgery the night before but we were told she would be just fine. I got a call around 5a.m stating we needed to come to the hospital because of her condition. I arrived between 6-6.30 i went the floor she had been on to ask where icu was I told a nurse in the hallway who I was and where was icu for my mother. She turned around and asked someone at the desk who was another nurse and she shouted across the room that she died in a loud voice. I was so totally stunned I didnt know what to do, but take off running, I was shocked at there manner of delivering information. My life since then has completely changed for me, the emotional stress of this ordeal has caused me a lot of grief, My question is, is there still time to file a suit against this hospital for this error, I have had nothing but problems with this hospital system for the last 3 years for one type of problem or another.

Thank You

Well, this isn't a civil rights question at all. It's a matter of whether the statement caused you such emotional distress as to be actionable and whether there is a statute of limitaitons is in play. The general statute of limitations in Illinois is two years, so it would seem your complaint is time barred.
