Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Illinois

Slander and defamation of charcter in the work place.

I have a coworker acusing me of doing drugs, and just doing anything she can to cause problems.I have been totally polite and do not speak with her unless it pertains to our job. She has been leading a hate campaign against me with other employees. I live in a small area but did not grow up here, and I am generally quiet. I feel like Im defenseless.I really like my job and would like to keep it! Ive been waiting for a drug test (dont do any drugs!) If I take it and pass, could I sue her for damaging my reputation! Im in a good position for promotion and I dont want her to ruin my chances.

I don't practice law in Illinois, so you should seek advice from a local attorney.

Generally, though if you are in a union you should pursue this through the union. If not, and it is creating a hostile work environment, you should seek to pursue it through the Illinois

local agency that investigates for the EEOC.

You might also have a defamation action, but in the workplace its frequently better to start your inquiry this way.
