Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Illinois
i wrote a check to the restuaurant i work for because they were supposed to cater our wedding. my wedding is not until june 16 2012 but i recently found out that i am pregnatn. my fiance and i decided we are just going to go to the courthouse to get married. i told my boss and she does not want to give my money back. she said i am past my 6 months mark. i never signed a contract with her. is she able to do this?

If she can prove a contract existed to cater your wedding for a specified price on a specified date with specified parameters, then you are potentially in breach of contract. If all you wrote was a deposit, however, perhaps she'll take this as a "settlement". If you wrote a check for the total amount, then depending on how much we're talking about (and weddings can be expensive), you might just want to make them fulfill their part of the bargain. I suggest you get an attorney who might be able to help -- I'd like to see the place identify exactly what "package" they intended you to get...things like that.
