Legal Question in Technology Law in Illinois
Downloading music
A Parishioner of mine, a young person, has been served with a court summons for downloading music off the internet.
Does this person need a lawyer?

Re: Downloading music
Absolutely. These cases are being seriously prosecuted by the record companies as you may have read in the news. If your parishoner does not respond to the summons, a default judgment will be taken against him or her and the fines could run into the tens of thousands of dollars. We would be very interested in discussing this case with your parishoner. Feel free to call us.

Yes, your parishioner needs an attorney. You should look for someone well-versed in both litigation (especially federal courts, where the case is most likely pending) and intellectual property. Please check out my web site in this regard.
Also, if your "young person" is truly young, say, aged 12 or 13 (and lawsuits have been brought of this type against such youths), my firm may very well be willing to undertake the representation on a pro bono basis, i.e., for free.

Yes, the young fellow needs an attorney. Lately, the recording industry has been pursuing a series of cases against unauthorized downloaders of music in a number of federal district courts across the country. Failure to respond within the required time frame for the summons may result in a default judgment against him. Consult an attorney. Good luck.
