Legal Question in Technology Law in Illinois

email

Who has the legal right in ownership of email? Is it the recipient or the system owner of the domain the email is sent through? Is there a difference in ownership of email sent to a business and regular mail sent through the U.S. postal service?

Re: email

E-mail is "owned" by the owner of the account through which the e-mail is hosted. Usually the e mployer owns e-mail account even though employees have invidual e-mail addresses.

Postal mail is more private, although some employers prohibit "private mail" coming to the place of employment, even if designated "personal and confidential'. Call or email for more assistance.
