Legal Question in Construction Law in Illinois
How do I get a contractor to pay for breaking a contract?
We hired a contractor after having a house fire. The house is not finsihed or liveable. He ran off with the money and has not been seen from since. I need free legal help since we have been taken for everything we have. Can anyone help me?

Whether you will be able to retain an attorney on a "contingent-fee" basis, i.e., you pay no fees to the attorney unless you collect something (in which case you would typically pay 1/3 of any recovery to the lawyer), depends upon certain factors.
First, you need to convey how much money is involved -- is this a $5,000 job or a $50,000 job?
Second, you will need to convey some information about the contractor -- where did you find him, is he still in business, has he filed for bankruptcy, does he have any assets?
Finally, what is the status of your homeowner's insurance? Did the insurance company pay you cash & you were obligated to find a contractor?
If you can locate him but the matter is small, you might want to think about filing a small claims suit against him.
