Illinois mechanic's lien laws do not require licensing to record a lien; the requirements are very clear. But depending on your contract, your failure to be licensed may be a breach of contract that gives the home owner a defense against payment. And you can be cited and get a ticket for failure to be licensed. Depending on how much you're owed, is not having a license worth the risk?
