Do you have any legal recourse if a contractor takes your
deposit and disappears and you cannot find him?

1. Stop payment on any checks immediately.
2. Call the police.
3. Contact the Attorney General of Illinois Consumer Fraud & Protection Division.
4. Hire a detective/skip tracer.
5. Possibly take a theft loss on your income tax return.
6. Hire an attorney.
