How binding is a verbal contract for someone who has performed work on a construction site but has not been compensated?

Verbal contracts are generally binding within certain restrictions - I need a little more information.
Was the agreement for you to do work for someone and they did not pay you for that work? Where you their employee? Or, are you the property owner and the agreement was for them to do work for you and they did not perform as agreed?
