Legal Question in Consumer Law in Illinois

12 month manufacturer warranty

I purchased a Sanyo 26 inch High Def TV in August of 2007. On Monday October 13, 2008, I called Sanyo customer service department and had expressed that my television set had stop functioning. The customer service rep over the telephone said, at this time she cannot assist me because my television set is passed the 12 month manufacturer warranty. I told customer service rep that I think its unfair for a consumer to spend $500 on a television set and have it stop functioning under normal operating conditions of 14 months. The manager got involved and he said that if I am willing to pay for labor, Sanyo will cover the cost of replacement parts. I called the TV repair shops that he recommended to me and their talking around $275-$300 labor costs to get this $500 TV fix. Is this my only option?

Re: 12 month manufacturer warranty

The short answer is: yes.

The slightly longer answer is: if nothing was inherently defective with the television's manufacturing, the store was not negligent in handling the television, and nobody made any guarantee to you that it should last longer than a year, then you are probably out of luck. The 12 month warranty that you agreed to when you bought the television pretty much laid out contractually what Sanyo owes you in terms of repairs. In that respect, you are getting a good deal that Sanyo is chipping in free parts.
