Legal Question in Consumer Law in Illinois

Used Car Purchase

I purchased a used car at a dealership, paid for 1/2 with a personal check and 1/2 with a credit card. The paperwork I signed did state that it was sold as-is. The salesman went over the vehicle with us, but we only found one door handle didn't work and the rear window seal needed repair. I told him that I would be taking it to a mechanic to have checked. I took the car home, the next day my mechanic said the SUV was unsafe to drive. The rear shackles were completely rusted through on one side and about to rust through on the other. Also the front wheel bearings were almost completely gone on both front tires. I went back to the dealership and returned the car. I told them I was cancelling the contract and stopping payment on my check and credit card. They told me that I could not do that and they would have the car towed back to my house - I bought it and they wouldn't take it back. What are my rights? It was returned within 48 hours.

Re: Used Car Purchase

48 hours or 48 minutes--doesn't really matter. As-is means as-is. Perhaps if they misrepresented something, for example, if you asked them about the front wheel bearing and they said they were brand new, you might have case. Once you pay your money and drive it away, it's your car. Next time, take to the mechanic FIRST.
