Legal Question in Consumer Law in Illinois

A company called the Direct readers guild contacted me at work and tried to sell me a magazine subscription. It was only supposed to be $3.49 per month for 5 random magazines. I felt pushed into agreeing so i said sure but when she asked for a method of payment I declined to give her any payment info (I felt like it was a scam at this point). Since then they've sent me a payment booklet where I am to pay $30/month for the next 3 years. I tried to call and cancel but they say you cant cancel because its preordered and prepaid. They also say that they have a recording to you agreeing to their verbal contract. I know wiretapping in Illinois is illegal without them letting you know you're being recorded and also that under the Uniform Commercial Code Statue of Frauds written contracts are required when there is a sale of good over $500 and the contract cannot be performed within 1 year. I haven't paid them a dime and they continue to flood my house with unwanted magazines (even though I've changed addresses since). Now I'm receiving a collection notice that states if I do not send in a form of payment within 10 days they will send a professional collection agency to my house to obtain a payment or repossession. Can they do this? What can I do?

Unless you want to hire an attorney, you might want to contact Lisa Madigan's office of Consumer Fraud and Protection (Attorney General) and the Better Business Bureau. Each can be of some help but the process can be slow.
