Legal Question in Consumer Law in Illinois
Gas Bill
I moved into a new house over 6 months ago. I set up a new account with our gas company, but they have never sent us a bill. We have called every month asking for a bill and yet we are still not receiving one. They can't even tell us any amount we owe over the phone. I am not sure how long this will drag on, but is their any law that will protect me from receiving a bill (say in a couple more months) that would exceed thousands of dollars? I don't think it is fair to a consumer who is actually making an effort to receive a bill. Am I just screwed?

Re: Gas Bill
You may be able to help the situation by writing a letter to the gas company. It would be hard to document what you are saying to the gas company with your phone calls. It is also possible that they are charging the former owners or tenants of your house for gas consumption. That would not be a situation which could go on forever, and would not be fair to them.
