Legal Question in Consumer Law in Illinois
I made reservations at a resort. A the time of the reservation I was not explained the cancellation policy. These were made within 2 weeks of our arrival date. The following week my uncle passed away. I called to cancel my reservations and was informed that Since I canceled my reservations withing the 30 days of the arrival date that I forfeited my deposit. Is it against the law for a place to do this? From what I have read it could fall under deceptive practice. Then they offered me a gift certificate after an argument. I told her I didn't want it and they should refund my money.

There is no requirement that they offer any kind of cancellation policy. I am not sure I follow how this is a deceptive practice. Perhaps there would be deception if you had asked about the cancellation policy and they lied to you, or if a cancellation policy posted at the resort or on their website varied from how your situation was handled.
