Legal Question in Consumer Law in Illinois

I paid for a 3 month membership to classmates.com//memory lane. After the 3 months were finished I was charged for another 3 months. I was not aware that they put me on a non-refundable automatic renewal program. I found this Illinois law 815 ILCS 601 and feel it applies to me. I had been a prior member and never had any problems with this company so I thought they were reputable. I have been online and have read over 3000 complaints about the same situation with others. Can you think of any additional pressure I can place on them to refund my money?

The law requires them to clearly and conspicuously display their automatic renewal policy and their cancellation procedure. It sounds like all of this is done on-line, so presumably there is an opt-in box that is checked and you are given the option to store your credit card information. Do you recall any of this? Can you get screen prints? They can escape Illinois Consumer Fraud Act liability if they have a written compliance policy, failure to comply was as a result of an error and after the error has caused noncompliance, they provide a refund. How much money are we talking about? A call or letter from an attorney could speed the process up. A threat or filing of a class action could also work (and may actually apply if you are talking about 3000 similar complaints). I have worked on and filed several of these types of cases (class). Could you email me the link to all the complaints? Where are you located in Illinois? Assuming you didn't just miss the boat (i.e. you actually signed up for renewal and don't remember), feel free to email me offline and we can get in touch. My email is [email protected]. Alex
