i stopped payment on a check written to a funeral home to transfer my mother's body from that funeral home to another. i am now being harassed and threatened for stopping payment. am i liable for this money? the funeral home is in illinois.

I am not sure I understand why you stopped payment. Was the funeral home entitled to the money? Did they provide you with a service for which you agreed to pay? If so, and it sounds like possibly they did, you could be responsible for the amount of the check, plus damages of up to three times the amount of the check, plus attorneys fees, plus court costs. And that assumes they do not seek to have you criminally prosecuted, which is something they might be able to do as well.
