Being sued over a debt

I am being sued by a law firm that bought the debt from collection agency. I am not disputing the debt, but I am concerned about how much I owe.

The complaint of the lawsuit seems very broilerplate and just has the amount I owe and that it was gotten from the collection agency.

I already filed my appearence and have a hearing date soon. As I don't have the money right now for a lawyer, I was wondering what my chances or options are if I go to court myself and ask the judge to force the plaintiff to prove that I owe what they are asking for.

Is there anything else I can or should do? As I said, I wish I could hire an attorney, but I'm afraid that I am on my own for now. Thank you.

The burden of proof is on the plaintiff.
