Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

in 2006 I attended a college in illinois. They were going to give me financial aid. I never got the financial aid after 2 semesters of going there and had to go to another school. Now they have given it to collections and want me to pay 16000. I am not using any credits earned there and wondering if I can get out of it.
