Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Name Change=New Debt

I am getting married in a couple of weeks and changing my last name is something that is important to my fianc. Problem is I have great credit and he does not (he owes about 10k in total and is behind in paying it off). If I change my last name but keep all our finances separate (i.e.: bank accts) and apply for nothing jointly; will any of his creditors (child support, IRS, and utility bills) come after me because we are now a union? Should I hyphenate it or keep my name the way it is?

name change does not do anything to your credit. However, where do you see his financial situation going, up or down.
