Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois
collection agency letter
I recently received a letter from a collection agency concerning a snowmobile loan. I took out the loan in 1996 and paid it off in March 2001. The collection agency is saying the loan payments stopped in March 2001 and the bank has no record of it being payed off. This is the first I have been contacted about this loan. Do I have to settle with the collection agency now? I am trying to find the paperwork from when I paid it off.

Re: collection agency letter
If you have documentation that you paid it off you shouldn't need to settle. I would request from the collection agency verification of the debt in writing. At that point if they still claim you owe something provide them with a copy of your documentation that shows that you have paid off the snow mobile.
