Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

collection for debt never owed

i recieved a collection letter for a credit card i can not find any information about. The agency has my ss #, and says i last made a payment in 1993. I filed for bancruptcy in 1994, and this debt was not included,(because i never had this card). I called the credit card company and they have no record of me ever being one of their customers. I can find no bills or checks ever made out to this credit card company. I read online that i could cause more trouble by responding to this claim. The statute of limitation is over, should i ignore this or respond?

I would not let this matter slip by without further investigation. Remember, somehow this collection agency obtained your SSN. When was the last time you checked your credit reports? There could be additional fraudulent information on your credit report and you need to act upon it now.
