Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Collection of ten year old bill

We had an account with Service Merchandise with balance of 230 dollars. Now 10 years later, a collection agency is badgering us for 670 dollars. We tried to contact Service Merchandise but they filed bankruptcy. Do we have to pay this bill? What recourse do we have?

Re: Collection of ten year old bill

Don't pay, don't respond. The statute of limitations is 10 years.

If they sue you, do not ignore it, you need to assert the defense of statute of limitations if they sue you.
