Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Collections-not small claims

I am a business owner. I have a customer who owes me a large amount of money (not small claims-it is more than $10,000). Do I need to hire an attorney to represent me, or can I represent myself?

Re: Collections-not small claims

That depends on your level of expertise. I like a medical analogy: You can take your own spleen out if you like. Is it a good idea? Depends on if you know where it is. When you get out of small claims, the rules become much more strict. If you miss a deadline or fail to file a document, you could lose your whole case. If it is only a little over $10K, you can still use the small claims court if you are only seeking the $10K.
