court summons for debt owed

will they let me settle out of court, and if so, for less then the debt?

It depends on the creditor. If it is a debt collector that bought the debt from someone else, they will probably be willing to settle. If it is an original creditor, the chances of settling is much lower. But it doesn't hurt to try. And whatever you do, make sure to appear at court.

Possibly. You will have to ask them. Make sure you do not miss your court date no matter, otherwise a default judgment will be entered against you.
