Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

credit counseling service failed

Hello,

I was married last August and at the time was enrolled in a credit counseling service that helped me to pay off two debts I owed. After I was married I notified the company of my name change and that my payments would be coming in from a new account. After two months I was notified that my name change had created difficulty with the credit counseling agency and my payments were not being made to my creditors. I was receiving calls from collection agencies. One of the agencies offered that I pay less than the debt I owed. Confused, I did not agree. After the confusion of my payments not being made, I was unsure what to do in regards to my debt. Who was I supposed to pay? The credit counseling service that put me in the mess? The collection agencies? A few months later my husband and I moved from WI to IL, where we now live. I have not payed off the debts and have not received any collection letters. I just do not want this problem following me and wish to resolve it. The two debts are about $1200 and $2500. If you could please help me, I would appreciate it.

I would recommend cancelling any arragement you have with the credit counselling agency and then contact the original creditors directly. If the original creditors insist you speak with the collection agencies, then get the contact info from them. But if the payments aren't getting to the creditors through the credit counselling agency, there is no reason to pay anything through them.
