Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois
My daughter left the state oweing her landlord back rent. (She is 34 yrs. old) I guess she had given her landlord my phone as a second contact number.. Some how her landlord got my mailing address and I got a bill in the mail today addressed to me from her landlord and as if I owed the man the money. Is this fraud on his part, what can I do? I am very upset over this!

I would suggest that you write the landlord a polite but strongly worded letter in response to the bill advising him that you are not legally responsible for your daughter's debt. (You didn't cosign a lease or sign a personal gurantee, did you?) You should advise the landlord that you will retain legal counsel to take legal action against him if he does not cease and desist all contact with you regarding this matter. You might consider advising him that you will report his actions to the better business bureau or the local news media. Most business people would like to avoid bad publicity.
