Is it legal for a debt collector to contact your neighbors to leave a message with them for you to call them?

Debt collectors are bound to respect your financial confidentiality. They cannot tell the neighbors that you owe money or that you are in default.

Debt collectors who violate these rules may be subject to stiff penalties. You should report these collectors to the State of Illinois if you feel they are violating your privacy or contact an attorney to help you handle the situation.
