Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Debt and death. Individual account but married

Hello,

A friend of mine's mom died about 8 months ago. Her husband is still alive. She had opened a couple of individual accounts (credit cards), and she owed approximately $5,000.00 Is the husband responsible for this debt or is it a write off to the credit card companies because of her death. She lived in Illinois.

Those debts would need to be paid by her estate, but not necessarily her husband. This can be a difficult distinction, but an attorney could make this determination.
