debt responsilibity after marriage

planning on getting maried. am i repsonsible for debts of my new husband that he assumed before our marriage? reside in illinois

No, you do not automatically become a party to the debts. But it would not be a bad idea to get a pre-nup to that effect if you are concerned about keeping your finances separate. There are also some practical concerns to think about, for example you will also be homeless if the bank forecloses on a your home and it is in his name.
