Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

My Father in Law passed away last week. My Mother In Law has no job and only has a small social security check monthly to live on. My Father In Law had been sick with cancer for over a year and had many medical bills. Thee question we would like to have answered is, since all of the bills were only in his name will she have to pay them as she has no life insurance and no way of being able to pay them. Does the liability end with his death. Thank you for your help.

Unless your mother signed a document making her personally liable, she is not liable for his bills. Moreover if her only income is from ss, a creditor can not go after those funds, even after they are deposited into a bank account.
