Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois
Good morning, yesterday I received a blocked call at my direct work extension inquiring about where would the best place to serve papers to of course myself. I asked the young lady was she at my place of employment she replied no she gave me a case number and a number to call to inquiry about who sent her. It is a company called Full Spectrum Ligiation I spoke with a man named Royce he said that I had a Clout Visa Card in 2004 and that I was being sued for 5500. The original line of credit was 500. He said that the company had sent out letters to home ( I never received any letters). I also checked my credit report and this company did a hard inquiry on me on July 10 2012 and obtained my basic contact info no information on the account in question was posted at all. The company number that was on the credit report was invalid as well. He stated that he could stop the process server by me agreeing to pay 300 by July 31. And they would report to all 3 credit bureaus that the account is paid off. The company is in California they have a c- on the BBB website. I just want to know If I should agree to pay. I have asked for proof of the original debt. Also when he negotiated with the process server and so called lawyers he did that all while placing me hold And was basically back on the phone with me in a matter of a minute after speaking with each person. That seemed very fishy to me. Any advice given would be greatly appreciated.
I don't even think that the so called process server knew the name or address of my employer just by the way she spoke with it seems as though she was hoping to get connected to a different department HR to obtain the address she asked me where are you located at a desk or anything I did not give her work address.
Thank you for your time.

It appears to the usual debt collector's tricks of purchasing your debt, then
threatening you to pressure you to pay an exorbitant amount. You should
not pay any amount which you do not consider fair and will resolve all
issues. Just because the collector is filing a case in court does not
require you to pay; they must prove what you owe, that it hasn't
been affected by the statute of limitations, etc. before they can
garnish wages or bank accounts, etc. Don't trust the info posted
on credit agency reports. The whole trickery is a game to force you
to pay an excessive amount.
I second that. Be wary and careful. Under current decisions, may be uncollectible anyway.
