Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Illinois Debt Statue of Limitation

Is there a statue of limitations on a credit card debt in Illinois?

Recently, I received a notice from a collection agency on a credit card debt they claim I owe from 1993.

How can I prove that I don't owe this money when it is so long ago?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Illinois Debt Statue of Limitation

On written contracts, which most credit cards are, the statutue of limitations is 10 years. When did you make your last payment on the card. If in fact it has been longer then 10 years then you should send a certified letter to the collection agency stating your facts and disputing the debt.
