Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

I have a large medical bill -almost 13 yrs old. (Over $40,000). My son was born premature and this is the bill to the Neonatal dr. I know I won't be able to get this paid, unless I win the lottery. I have been told (not a reliable source) that if a debt is over 10 years old the creditor can't "come after you". Not sure I believe that. This is why I am seeking credible advice. What are my options? I am leaning towards filing bankruptcy, but really don't want to.

Thanks for your time!!

If you have not made a payment in 10 years, you can raise the defense of statute of limitations. (10 years). That does stop them for asking for payment. If they do more than that they may be violating the law.
