Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois
Is there any legal recourse for an error reported on your credit report?
Here is the scenario:
I have absolutely PERFECT credit (rephrasehad).
I closed a public utility account due to moving and asked for the final bill to be sent to my new address (I was current and never late).
I did not receive the final bill for unknown reasons.
The bill was sent to a collection agency two weeks after the final bill was due.
I called the original company who issued the bill and paid them that day.
The representative at the billing company stated I should have never received a call from a collector as their policy is 90 days before that can be done.
I checked my credit report and now have a mark for account went to collections.
This mark will not prevent me from getting a loan but can impact my rate which will equal several thousand dollars over the course of a home loan.
Thank you in advance for any feedback.

Yes you can contact the credit agencies - that is your right under federal law. And you may need the utility's help in admitting the bill went to collections prematurely.
