Marital credit obligation
In the State of Illinois is a wife obligated to pay the debts of her husband if she did not sign any papers.

In Illinois, one spouse is not liable for another spouses debts. In order to be liable for a spouse's debts both husband and wife must sign any papers. If only one spouse signs a paper saying that he will be liable then only the one who signs will be liable.

I must add someting to what Mr. Leeders said. If your husband and you have a joint bank account, and your husband owes money to say, a credit card company who obtains a judgment against him, the credit card company can gain access to the funds in the joint account even if you were the one to put the money there.
Stated differently, your husband cannot shield his assets simply by putting them in both of yours name.
