Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Mom in nursing home - responsible for her debt?

My mom has Alzheimers and recently entered a nursing home. Her whole social security check is now going to the nursing home. She's on public aid, and has no pension or property. She has two credit cards, which are now over the limit and the fees are increasing since I can not afford to pay them for her. I also am not a co-signer on them, but they are mailed to my address since I was paying them for her from her social security before she entered the nursing home. What would happen if I stop paying them for her? I really can't keep up the payments for much longer and am afraid of what the creditors can do. Could someone please advise me? I would appreciate any help very much. Thank you!

If you never used the card yourself for purchases then from what you said your mom is judgment proof. I would send a letter to the creditors advising them of your mom's condition and that no further payments will be made. Of course you will continue to receive calls and letters but at that point just send a cease and desist letter to the creditors. If you need help please call my office.
