Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois
I moved into my apartment on August of last year. I did not have money for the rent, and a friend offered assistance and wrote a check to my landlord directly. At the time she said it was a gift, however now she is wanting me to pay her back. She says she is gonna sue me and take me to court...what are my legal rights?

Your "legal rights" are to ignore her and risk a lawsuit you'll have to defend, or see if you can settle with her, and if not bite the bullet and pay her back.
Apparently you have NO other written indication of what this was. Do you even remember whether there was anything written in the "Memo" portion on the bottom left or anyplace else on it?
If she's angry enough or needs the $ enough she may be able to sue in small claims and it will be a case of he said/she said. Do you want to have to defend the case? Is there any reason you can't pay her back?
There's no telling whether you'll win or lose if you don't have anything else to support your statement and if you have no other facts or circumstances to support it either.
