Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

We never neglecting paying on this credit card dept, we could not at the time afford to pay what they were asking. We tried to nogotiate a payment that would fit within our means but thy would not budge.They sold the dept to a dept collector who only harrassed us and never tried to nogotiate. This collector was caught using bad tactics and the calls stopped, shortly after we recieved a summons from the credit card company itself. My question is can they turn it over to a dept collector and then take it back and sue.

Yes - the debt collector was acting as their agent. Probably did not own the claim.
