Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois
Just Received Summons to Pay a Bill from 1997
I thought that I had made an arrangement with the company to whom I owed money. I know that the government has no statute of limitations on their ability to collect truant debt. I have my receipts from the payments that I made to settle this bill. But, isn't there a 7 year limit on collecting from a person who owes debt? I really need to know. Thank you.

Depends on whether the obligation to pay was in writing or not. Generally the statute of limitations is five years for an oral contract and ten for a written contract.
