SSI Check garnished for unpaid student loan

My husband and I receive SSI. It is our only income. I owe for an unpaid student loan that I just can't pay. They say that my SSI check will be garnished starting next month. Can they do that? Or are they just trying to scare me? Please let me know something OK. Thanks so much.

Yes, there is case law allowing for that to happen, however, you should look into obtaining a discharge in student loans based on your disability. I'd recommend consulting a local attorney about this.
