Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Summons to appear in court.

The summons is for an amount owed to a doctor that a detective delivered to a friend of mine on 09/06/06 and I have to appear in court on 09/12/07. Do I need to appear in court or should I let my lawyer handle it?
