Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

I have a vendor who hasn't billed me for a year and a half after calling him 3 times requesting a bill. I want to pay him, but I don't want to be at risk of a lawsuit if he decides to bill me and charge me late fees. How can I protect myself?

How about a simple letter advising him that you have not received a bill.
