Does writing Paid In Full on check void all outstanding balance?

If I have a debt with a credit card, finance company, doctor / hospital, or any other party, and I do not pay the balance due in full but write Paid In Full in the memo section of the check, and they cash the check does this release me from the remaining balance? I heard some coworkers discussing this & said I doubted this would constitute payment in full
