Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

At 17, I was convicted (as an adult) of residential burglary.I was sentenced to 6 years and completed my time. I am now 29 and have not been in any trouble since. Having this on my record has cost me a lot of job opportunities. I am now in college and am concerned how this will continue to hold me back. Is there a way to have my record sealed?

The question is whether you can have it expunged. I honestly don't know, but you note you were convicted as an adult even though you were 17. You should see a criminal law attorney (even the one who defended you at trial if you think he or she did a good job but just couldn't win...) who is familiar with this kind of thing. You're right; it's that important to your future and waiting for free legal advice here just won't do you the justice you need and may be entitled to. Worst case is 6 years later if you're "clean" that might help but if it can't be expunged, it will dog you one way or the other. It's a shame in a way, but that's the way employers look at it and your opportunities will be restricted with a felony conviction.
