Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
My 13 year old gat caught shoplifting
don't misunderstand. I'm glad he got caught. however, Macy's didn't want to envolve the police. now they demand that we pay $500.00 fine to them. this din't seem right to me. If they would have called the police and gone to court. he might have got probation. this is his first offence.
Sorry I wasn't very clear before.
My question is do we have to pay Macy's the $500 or what advice would you give us?

Pay the money. Even if charges were filed, your son would still be required to pay the department store, pursuant to Illinois statute.
